World War ll Newsreels made in Arizona

by

Charles W. Herbert

No photographer has had a greater influence on the State of Arizona than Charles W. Herbert. He founded Western Ways Photography Company in the 1940's and was a tireless promoter of the beauty of the state through many articles in Arizona Highways and numerous other magazines. Barry Goldwater was a great admirer of his work and Western Ways was the company that brought Ray Manley to Tucson. Herbert was a close friend of Ted DeGrazia and they worked on many projects together including newsreels that were distributed around the world. Charles and his wife Lucile were with Fox Movietone News before WWll and shot the first sound film made in Jerusalem in 1935. The list of credits goes on and on but here is a look at stills taken from two newsreels made in Arizona.
